Now that summer is officially in full swing, we can get down to
some serious planting! One important consideration when designing
your landscape is to create an environment that will attract and sustain
wildlife.
Birds, Bees, Butterflies and other pollinators
are not only beautiful and fun to watch; but also necessary for
flowers to bloom, and for those blooms to turn into fruits. Without
these pollinators, we would soon run out of food.
No matter the amount of space you
have available, you can create a garden that attracts
beautiful wildlife and helps to restore the cohesive balance between man
and nature.
By providing food, water, cover and a place for wildlife to
raise their young--and by incorporating sustainable gardening
practices--you not only help wildlife, but you also create a tranquil
environment for you and your family to enjoy for years to come.

Creating
a Wildlife Habitat Considerations for
creating your wildlife friendly garden
A Wildlife friendly garden | There are four main
categories to consider when creating your wildlife garden: food, water,
shelter, and safety (not all that different from our needs!)
Everyone
needs to eat! Planting native perennials, berries, shrubs and trees are
the best way to provide the foliage, nectar, pollen, berries, seeds,
and nuts that many wildlife species require to survive. In our harsh
climate, it is also sometimes necessary, but always a good idea, to
supplement those food sources with other bird and small animal feeders.
We have a large selection to choose from, and food to attract your
favorite wildlife. Clean water is necessary
for many purposes, including drinking, bathing, and reproduction.
Providing a water source can be as simple as a bird bath or
as elaborate as a stream and pond feature. Whatever you choose, it
is important that you properly maintain the water element. Wildlife
also require places to hide from predators, to make them feel safe, and
where they can raise their young. You can incorporate shelter with
different heights and varieties of vegetation and plant life. |
Planning
your Wildlife Habitat Six Easy Steps When
your intention is to create an attractive and productive wildlife
habitat, it is important that you have a plan. There are two spaces
to consider: the ground surface, or horizontal area of your lot; as
well as the vertical area, composed of the tree's canopy, understory
vegetation (smaller trees, shrubs, and vines), the floor (low-growing
groundcover), and the basement (within the soil). Different wildlife
species inhabit each zone, so you have the potential of providing
numerous habitats in even the smallest yard. You
will begin your wildlife habitat plan with trees and shrubs. These are
the backbone of your landscape design. Proper selection of plant
material will ensure that you appreciate the landscape aesthetically,
and that you are providing shelter and food for wildlife. Our friendly
sales staff will be happy to assist you in selecting the appropriate
trees and/or shrubs. |
