Dear Marni,

"Drought tolerant" is a buzz word we hear all the time these days. But what does that really mean? Many feel that xeriscaping or a drought tolerant landscape translate to a yard covered in gravel or rock scaping; maybe a dry creek and a small area of bark chips for the kids to play in. The reality is, not only is this solution not very attractive to most, it really isn't very good for the environment. Cement will only prevent any rainfall from seeping into the soil; and gravel contributes to flash flooding concers when it does rain. They also heat up your yard and home more, with the rocks and pavement soaking in the sun and reflecting all that heat back onto your house.

The best solution for a drought tolerant home is actually to landscape with water wise trees, shrubs, and perennials. Warner Grown native and water wise plants are super hardy, bred to withstand our extreme temperature fluctuations, and inherenetly require less water.
Water-wise LandscapingWater Wise

A water-wise landscape is one that is functional, attractive, easily maintained in its natural surroundings and, more importantly, helps to conserve water.

There are a few simple principles to keep in mind when we design, install, and manage our landscapes in order to ensure a water-wise landscape.

1.  When selecting plants, consider native or drought tolerant plants. (A general rule is that the broader the leaf, the more water the plant will need.) Shop at Warner's for plants that are well-suited to Northern Arizona and your particular microclimate.  Keep turf grass (the thirstiest of all!) to a minimum. Plant trees whenever possible. They help to lower air and soil temperatures, reducing plant and soil moisture loss.
