SPRING BLOOMING BULBS

It's almost time to plant bulbs! But definitely time to purchase your bulbs, and prepare your flower beds. Our last newsletter was all about bulbs, check it out here.

Hint: prepare your beds with a little Blood Meal to keep the critters from eating your freshly planted bulbs!

We also made reference to "100 days of Color". By grouping your bulb plantings, you can have bulbs blooming from early to late spring - up to 100 days! Here's a handy guide of which bulbs will bloom when, and their bloom height, to help you create a gorgeous, long term flowering bed.

Dear Marni,

A few months ago, we published a newsletter all about attracting wildlife to your garden. At the time I wrote that article, I LOVED all wildlife. I didn't mind that the deer wandered into my yard and ate my plants, or that the crazy squirrels were running all around, jumping from treetops to the roof of my house. I thought that was all part of the joy and beauty of a garden.

Since that time, a series of encounters with garden critters and a little education have led me to change my mind about certain critters in the yard. Over the last 3 weeks, I have had encounters with skunks, raccoons, and gophers, and squirrels; in my yard alone! And what I have learned about these critters has made me even more certain that I should get rid of them.

Unwanted critters in your yard, such as skunks, raccoons, gophers, moles, and many more, can be more than just annoying. Skunks, for example, are common carriers of rabies, and they frequently spray our domestic pets; wreaking havoc on the entire household!

Squirrels, which seem cute and cuddly from afar, but in close confines pose quite a danger. They can also carry disease and, especially in numbers, will tear apart your attic, basement, or any other entry to a suitable home for them.

Raccoons are another very pesky - and dangerous - critter who also spread diseases. In particular, there is a bacteria that can be present in their droppings which is incredibly dangerous to children. In addition, raccoons can be devastating to your home. They have been known to make their nests in the attic, basement, even the hot tub! Not only do they get into your garbage and steal all of your dogs' food, but they may also enter the home, posing a threat to pets and children; as well as leaving their droppings around the home.

In addition to these problems, all of these critters can wreak havoc in our yard and garden. They eat the foliage of our most expensive and Critters in the gardenfavorite plants and eat bulbs right out of the ground - before they even have a chance to bloom! They damage the root systems of some plants, and can produce unsightly mounds in the garden. In addition, they leave their stinky poo in the most inconvenient places!

In this guide, Critter Repellents & Poisons, we outline some of the most common problem critters, and solutions to getting them out of your yard. Our solutions range from natural deterrents all the way to poisons or traps. If you're having trouble deciding, come in to the garden center and one of our knowledgeable salespeople will help you find the right solution for your pest!

Seasonal Remindersreminders

1. Pick up some frost cloth! Fall really is just around the corner, and our nighttime temperatures may begin to drop below the "safe" zone within the next couple of weeks. Stock up now on frost cloth, wall o'water's, and other season extenders so you're prepared BEFORE the frost! Then, "friend" us on Facebook and we'll keep you posted when the mercury threatens to dip too low.

2. Prepare for spring flowering bulb planting. Find locations in your garden where you can add a little spring color, with well-drained soils. Prepare the beds by amending the existing soil with a 50/50 blend Warner's Supreme Planting Mix and Gypsum Soil Magic. Stock up on your favorite bulbs and some Bone Meal and Blood Meal to use when planting! (The Blood Meal will help keep critters away from your newly planted bulbs!)

3. Try to put up with spiders in the garden! Most spiders found in the garden are harmless to us, but take control of pests that will otherwise devastate some of your garden plants.

We hope that this guide to unwanted critters in the garden has been helpful to you! What experiences have you had with critters in the garden? We'd like to hear from you! Share your stories on our Facebook page, or reply to this email.

Fall is such a great time to be in the garden and with all the rain we had last week, there's never been a better time to plant! We're still well stocked on trees and shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs, and more; so hurry in and start planting!

Sincerely,

The Warner's Team
