The "Climb to Conquer Cancer" is coming up this Saturday! Warner's team will be there, will you? We hope to see you!

If you can't make it, show your support by donating to our team. (All proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society).

As you can see, we need a lot of help reaching our goal!

We are also offering FREE potting if you purchase the plants and container.

Have some existing containers that need some perking up? Bring them in (or a photo if they're too heavy), and we'll help you with what to add to them to make them really sparkle again.

Limited quantities available. Large Koi are not for sale. We cannot guarantee we will catch a specific fish.

We get a lot of calls and questions this time of year about whether it's too late to plant, or "how much time do I have left?" So this issue is dedicated to late summer gardening.

First of all, let me assure you, it is not too late to plant! In fact, in Flagstaff, you can plant just about anything, anytime you can dig a hole in the ground. There are a lot of different theories and beliefs on when the best time to plant may be, but our (general) recommendation is: anytime you find the plant you like, can dig a hole to put it in (meaning the ground isn't frozen), and are going to be around to give it the water and care it needs (this is the most important!); you should plant it!

While we're on the subject, gardening season is not over! There are a number of things that need to be done in your garden in late summer, and some fun things you can do too! Now that school's back in session, and you have all that free time to yourself (ha ha!), you can get back in the garden! Here's a little checklist to get you started.

Late Summer Gardener's Checklist

1.  Get weeds under control. It may be tempting to let them go; after all, we're nearing the end of summer and they're not too busy right now. However, if you let them be, they will reseed and you will have twice as many to contend with next spring! Come in and visit with us, and we'll help you figure out the best plan of attack.

2. Deadhead perennials. Many of our perennials will continue blooming well into fall, but need to be dead-headed in order to rebloom. Also, it just looks prettier.

3. Critique your garden and yard as a whole. Right now, your garden is in 'full swing'. Everything is about as big as it's going to get (this year), and with the rains we've been having, the colors are as brilliant as you could hope for. Step back and really look at your garden, as if for the first time. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Manage harvests. As your veggies and herbs (hopefully) are producing bountiful harvests, you may find yourself with too much of a good thing. Stay on top of harvesting in order to maintain the health of your plants, and if you missed our canning and preserving workshop, here are a couple of links to great preserving tips:

"Keeping the harvest fresh", Vegetablegardener.com

"What to do when everything is ripe at once" - Vegetablegardener.com

 "Canning Tomatoes" video - Finegardening.com

2. Avoid Overhead Watering. Vegetables, especially, don't like water on their leaves. It can cause burning and many diseases. While we can't keep the rain away, we can control how we hand water. It is best to water with drip irrigation or a soaker hose, directly at the base of the plant. It is also best to water in the morning, so that the foliage is dry by evening.

We hope you've enjoyed your checklist of things to do in the garden this month.  Stop by and see us for more tips, and happy gardening!

Sincerely,

The Warner's Team
