Water,
water conservation, and lack of water... Water is
on a lot of our minds lately! Amid controversial
discussions of more stringent local water
restrictions, dismal news regarding climate
change, and recent increases in city water rates;
many of us are hesitant to plant anything at
all.
So
what is the alternative? Should we all turn to
landscaping our yards with gravel, rock, or
cement? I, for one, will not! I cannot live in a
community devoid of vegetation, and I don't think
that most of our residents want to do so either.
This type of landscaping is actually more harmful
for the environment; causing the temperatures to
rise and the rain we do get to run off and cause
flooding and waste. Not to mention, it's not
very attractive!
There
are other options; starting with ways to reduce
water use, ways to collect the water from runoff,
and ways to reuse water. If you're looking to
create a beautiful, lush landscape; while reducing
your water use, please come in and visit with us.
We have many excellent alternatives to turf lawn,
as well as many drought tolerant and native
plants. You can also add a rain barrel to take
advantage of our monsoon season! The monsoon
season is an excellent time to plant! With the
additional moisture and cooling afternoons, your
newly planted plants will establish much easier;
especially smaller annuals and
perennials.
Not
interested in doing the work yourself, or is the
scope of your project outside your area of
expertise? Our landscape division can help with
integrated water collection systems, permeable
pavers, xeriscaping, and many other solutions to
water issues. | |

Seasonal
Reminders
1.
Mulch vegetables, annuals, perennials...
everything! Bark mulch helps your beds to retain
moisture, repel insects, and prevent soil
runoff.
2.
Protect Japanese maples. Japanese maples do not
tolerate extreme sun, heat, or wind. Provide
extra moisture (on days it doesn't rain!), and
use shade cloth if your chosen location gets too
much sun.
3.
Monitor your vegetable garden for pests and
disease.
4.
Take advantage of the monsoon season: Install a
rain barrel, and plant some new trees, shrubs,
anything!! |
Be
Water-wise with a Rain Barrel
Environmentally
conscious and thrifty gardeners look for ways to
keep from wasting water while minimizing run-off
and the pollution and erosion problems it can
create. Using a rain barrel to capture water
running off a roof is one popular way to
accomplish both. The barrel is hooked up to a
downspout to catch and store runoff from a rain
storm for use later in the garden when the
weather turns dry.
One
of the challenges with any standing water is to
keep it fresh and insect-free. You will want to
add a screen to the top of the
barrel to keep debris out and mosquitoes
from getting in to breed. You can also float
mosquito "dunks," disks that contain the safe
bacterial pesticide B.t.i., which prevents
mosquito larvae from hatching.
