It's
spring in Flagstaff, and most of you know what
that means: time to move and cover plants! Our
daytime temperatures are really warm and
beautiful, but the nighttime temperatures are
hovering right about freezing. Although the next
few nights are predicted to be pretty mild,
most assuredly we will reach freezing again
sometime next week.
What
can you do to help your tender plants through this
difficult transition time? Try one of the many
season extenders available, such as wall-o-waters
or frost cloth. Next, make sure you're giving your
plants ample water; and watering properly! If you
have newly planted trees or shrubs that appear to
be stressed or have frost damage, water with a
root stimulator solution for a couple of
weeks.
Stop
in and visit with us if you're unsure about which
plants should be covered or protected. And, think
warm thoughts!!

This
week at Warner's, we're focusing on raised
garden beds. There are many benefits to growing
in raised beds; especially when growing
vegetables. First of all, you are able to
control the soil that goes into the bed, and
provide only the richest, purest, and
well-draining soil that your plants need.
Second, since the beds are raised up, the soil
warms up faster, so you can plant many of your
plants earlier (just make sure to use a season
extender once you do!). Raised beds also make it
easier to work around, weed, and harvest your
plants, since they are smaller and all in one
spot. You also save on water, as the raised bed
helps prevent run-off and ensure that you're
watering properly!
This
coming Saturday, (5/14 at 10am), we're having
our Raised Gardening seminar, where you'll learn
all about how to create a raised garden, what
type of soil to put in it, and the appropriate
things to plant in it. In the meantime, we found
this great video on building a raised bed from
the National Gardening Association.
