You might be thinking that this big snow storm is really going to set you back with your gardening. But it doesn't have to! As long as your tender plants have been covered, the extra moisture will be really good for your plants, and many of your cool season veggies need a little frost to perform well.
Even with all the snow, we can work on preparing our garden for spring planting, and start our compost pile!
Healthy soil is the first step to a healthy, green garden. When you have a rich, organic soil, your plants will be healthier; you will help keep the bugs away, eliminating the need for insecticides; the soil will retain moisture better, helping your plants hold on to the water you give them; and you're starting out rich in organic nutrients, making synthetic fertilizers unnecessary.
If you couldn't make it to our composting and garden preparation seminar this week, visit our website and/or facebook page later this week for the handouts and more details.
This week at Warner's is all about unlocking the magic of bare root! Bare root plants are a great way to introduce a whole lot of edibles into your yard, easily and inexpensively. Take a look at our feature article for more information on why we like to plant with bare root, and a handy guide on how to plant it.
Also take a look at our Seasonal Reminders at the end of this enewsletter for some other tips of what to do in the garden right now.

What is bare root? Bare root plants are dormant (not actively growing) perennial plants that are dug up and stored without any soil around their roots. Why bare root? Because the grower hasn't invested as much time caring for and maintaining the bare root plants, the cost of bare root is significantly lower than containerized plants. We also save a bunch in shipping, because the plants are much lighter than containerized. Bare root plants also have great success with transplanting, and are resistant to shock because they are still dormant when planted. This is all true, of course, only with bare root plants that are properly cared for, from the grower to your yard. You can rest assured that the bare root plants you'll find at Warner's have been pampered and treated tenderly up until you get them home. Now what? If you're not able to plant your bare root plants right away (within a day), heel them in by covering them with compost or planting mix. When you are ready to plant, click here to read how!
