This time of year, many of us begin dreaming of and planning our vegetable and herb gardens.
Even though spring and
our last frost (typically June 15th!) seem really far away,
it's never too early to plan; and some seeds will need to be
started indoors within the next month.
Our next few
eNewsletters will focus on vegetable and herb gardens. This article
is dedicated to planning, and throughout the winter, we'll follow up
with seed starting, reminders of when to transplant and which
varieties have proven most successful in our climates.
If you haven't already begun your planting calendar, let's get to it! |

Create your Gardening Calendar
-
Select
the vegetables and herbs that you will grow this year. Our packaged
seeds have already started to arrive, but if there's something in
particular you want, let us know and we'll try to get it! (If you're
having trouble selecting varieties that will do well in our climate,
stop in and visit with us. We'd love to share our expertise and
experience!) -
Calculate
seed starting dates. Your seed packet will specify the best
time to sow. Some varieties should be planted as seeds directly
into the garden at a specific point in the growing season. Others thrive
if the seeds are started indoors a few weeks prior to the last expected
frost. List each plant you intend to grow and record the date on which
seeds should be sown. Remember, our last frost date is typically June
15. -
Record transplant dates. Bedding Plants and
seedlings you started indoors will need to be transplanted when soil
temperature and moisture levels are appropriate, and this will vary from
one plant to the next. For example, root plants can be
transplanted much earlier than your tomato seedlings. Record these dates
on your transplanting list. -
Record
expected harvest dates for vegetables. Seed packets and plant
information labels specify the number of days from transplant that you
should expect to harvest. Based on your transplant dates, calculate the
approximate harvest dates for each vegetable and record them on your
harvesting list. -
Transfer
the dates for the tasks on your lists to a large wall calendar, or use a
calendar template or spreadsheet to create your own calendar.

Seasonal Reminders
1. Water trees, shrubs, and perennial beds. The
high winds, extreme temperatures, and overall crazy Flagstaff climate
can be very stressful to your trees and shrubs; even in winter. The best
way to protect them is to provide plenty of water ~ at least once this
month, give each of your plants a generous drink of water.
2. Water outdoor container plants. Whether
your container plants are wintering outdoors or in, they will need to
be watered about once every month. Check the soil monthly ~ they don't
need as much water as they do during the growing season, but you don't
want the soil to dry out completely either. Even if the soil is frozen,
your plants need tepid water. Nothing is worse than cold + dry for your
container plants!
